About this surah
At-Tariq means The Night Visitor, a bright star that appears in the dark sky. The surah reminds us that Allah has placed a watcher over every soul. It asks us to look at how we were created from a small drop, and says that the One who made us the first time can easily bring us back to life. It is short and full of wonder.
Arabic and meaning
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلطَّارِقِ(1)
By the sky and at-Tariq.
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلطَّارِقُ(2)
But what will let you know what at-Tariq is?
ٱلنَّجْمُ ٱلثَّاقِبُ(3)
The Piercing Star.
إِن كُلُّ نَفْسٍۢ لَّمَّا عَلَيْهَا حَافِظٌۭ(4)
There is no soul without a Protector over it.
فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ مِمَّ خُلِقَ(5)
Let man consider what he was created from.
خُلِقَ مِن مَّآءٍۢ دَافِقٍۢ(6)
He was created from gushing liquid.
يَخْرُجُ مِنۢ بَيْنِ ٱلصُّلْبِ وَٱلتَّرَآئِبِ(7)
Issuing from between the backbone and the breastbones.
إِنَّهُۥ عَلَىٰ رَجْعِهِۦ لَقَادِرٌۭ(8)
He is certainly able to return him.
يَوْمَ تُبْلَى ٱلسَّرَآئِرُ(9)
On the Day when the secrets are disclosed.
فَمَا لَهُۥ مِن قُوَّةٍۢ وَلَا نَاصِرٍۢ(10)
He will have no strength, and no supporter.
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلرَّجْعِ(11)
By the sky that returns.
وَٱلْأَرْضِ ذَاتِ ٱلصَّدْعِ(12)
And the earth that cracks open.
إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلٌۭ فَصْلٌۭ(13)
It is a Decisive Word.
وَمَا هُوَ بِٱلْهَزْلِ(14)
It is no joke.
إِنَّهُمْ يَكِيدُونَ كَيْدًۭا(15)
They plot and scheme.
وَأَكِيدُ كَيْدًۭا(16)
But I plot and scheme.
فَمَهِّلِ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ أَمْهِلْهُمْ رُوَيْدًۢا(17)
Therefore, give the blasphemers respite, a brief respite.
