About this surah
Al-A'la means The Most High. It begins by telling us to glorify the name of our Lord, the Most High, who created everything in perfect measure and guided it. The surah is gentle and hopeful, saying that whoever purifies their heart and remembers Allah will succeed. It is often recited in prayer because it is short, beautiful and easy for children to memorise.
Arabic and meaning
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ سَبِّحِ ٱسْمَ رَبِّكَ ٱلْأَعْلَى(1)
Praise the Name of your Lord, the Most High.
ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ(2)
He who creates and regulates.
وَٱلَّذِى قَدَّرَ فَهَدَىٰ(3)
He who measures and guides.
وَٱلَّذِىٓ أَخْرَجَ ٱلْمَرْعَىٰ(4)
He who produces the pasture.
فَجَعَلَهُۥ غُثَآءً أَحْوَىٰ(5)
And then turns it into light debris.
سَنُقْرِئُكَ فَلَا تَنسَىٰٓ(6)
We will make you read, so do not forget.
إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ يَعْلَمُ ٱلْجَهْرَ وَمَا يَخْفَىٰ(7)
Except what God wills. He knows what is declared, and what is hidden.
وَنُيَسِّرُكَ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ(8)
We will ease you into the Easy Way.
فَذَكِّرْ إِن نَّفَعَتِ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ(9)
So remind, if reminding helps.
سَيَذَّكَّرُ مَن يَخْشَىٰ(10)
The reverent will remember.
وَيَتَجَنَّبُهَا ٱلْأَشْقَى(11)
But the wretched will avoid it.
ٱلَّذِى يَصْلَى ٱلنَّارَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ(12)
He who will enter the Gigantic Fire.
ثُمَّ لَا يَمُوتُ فِيهَا وَلَا يَحْيَىٰ(13)
Where he will neither die, nor live.
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ(14)
Successful is he who purifies himself.
وَذَكَرَ ٱسْمَ رَبِّهِۦ فَصَلَّىٰ(15)
And mentions the name of his Lord, and prays.
بَلْ تُؤْثِرُونَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا(16)
But you prefer the present life.
وَٱلْءَاخِرَةُ خَيْرٌۭ وَأَبْقَىٰٓ(17)
Though the Hereafter is better, and more lasting.
إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَفِى ٱلصُّحُفِ ٱلْأُولَىٰ(18)
This is in the former scriptures.
صُحُفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَمُوسَىٰ(19)
