About this surah
Al-Buruj means The Great Stars. It begins with an oath by the sky and its constellations. The surah tells of believers long ago who were harmed because they believed in Allah alone, and it praises their patience. It reminds us that Allah sees everything, forgives those who turn to Him, and loves those who stay firm. It is a surah about courage and trust.
Arabic and meaning
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلْبُرُوجِ(1)
By the sky with the constellations.
وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْمَوْعُودِ(2)
And by the Promised Day.
وَشَاهِدٍۢ وَمَشْهُودٍۢ(3)
And by the witness and the witnessed.
قُتِلَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْأُخْدُودِ(4)
Destroyed were the People of the Trench.
ٱلنَّارِ ذَاتِ ٱلْوَقُودِ(5)
The fire supplied with fuel.
إِذْ هُمْ عَلَيْهَا قُعُودٌۭ(6)
While they sat around it.
وَهُمْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَفْعَلُونَ بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ شُهُودٌۭ(7)
And were witnessing what they did to the believers.
وَمَا نَقَمُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّآ أَن يُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَمِيدِ(8)
They begrudged them only because they believed in God the Almighty, the Praiseworthy.
ٱلَّذِى لَهُۥ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ شَهِيدٌ(9)
To Whom belongs the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth. God is witness over everything.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ فَتَنُوا۟ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَتُوبُوا۟ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ ٱلْحَرِيقِ(10)
Those who tempt the believers, men and women, then do not repent; for them is the punishment of Hell; for them is the punishment of Burning.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُمْ جَنَّٰتٌۭ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْكَبِيرُ(11)
Those who believe and do righteous deeds will have Gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great triumph.
إِنَّ بَطْشَ رَبِّكَ لَشَدِيدٌ(12)
The onslaught of your Lord is severe.
إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ يُبْدِئُ وَيُعِيدُ(13)
It is He who begins and repeats.
وَهُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلْوَدُودُ(14)
And He is the Forgiving, the Loving.
ذُو ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْمَجِيدُ(15)
Possessor of the Glorious Throne.
فَعَّالٌۭ لِّمَا يُرِيدُ(16)
Doer of whatever He wills.
هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْجُنُودِ(17)
Has there come to you the story of the legions?
فِرْعَوْنَ وَثَمُودَ(18)
Of Pharaoh and Thamood?
بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فِى تَكْذِيبٍۢ(19)
In fact, those who disbelieve are in denial.
وَٱللَّهُ مِن وَرَآئِهِم مُّحِيطٌۢ(20)
And God encloses them from beyond.
بَلْ هُوَ قُرْءَانٌۭ مَّجِيدٌۭ(21)
In fact, it is a Glorious Quran.
فِى لَوْحٍۢ مَّحْفُوظٍۭ(22)
