About this surah
Al-Inshiqaq means The Splitting. It describes the sky splitting and the earth stretching out on the Day of Judgement, when everyone will meet their Lord. The surah says people will be given their record of deeds, and it reminds us that our life is a journey with stages. It encourages us to keep doing good so that our record is one we are happy to receive.
Arabic and meaning
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنشَقَّتْ(1)
When the sky is ruptured.
وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ(2)
And hearkens to its Lord, as it must.
وَإِذَا ٱلْأَرْضُ مُدَّتْ(3)
And when the earth is leveled out.
وَأَلْقَتْ مَا فِيهَا وَتَخَلَّتْ(4)
And casts out what is in it, and becomes empty.
وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ(5)
And hearkens to its Lord, as it must.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدْحًۭا فَمُلَٰقِيهِ(6)
O man! You are laboring towards your Lord, and you will meet Him.
فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ(7)
As for him who is given his book in his right hand.
فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًۭا يَسِيرًۭا(8)
He will have an easy settlement.
وَيَنقَلِبُ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ مَسْرُورًۭا(9)
And will return to his family delighted.
وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ وَرَآءَ ظَهْرِهِۦ(10)
But as for him who is given his book behind his back.
فَسَوْفَ يَدْعُوا۟ ثُبُورًۭا(11)
He will call for death.
وَيَصْلَىٰ سَعِيرًا(12)
And will enter the Blaze.
إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فِىٓ أَهْلِهِۦ مَسْرُورًا(13)
He used to be happy among his family.
إِنَّهُۥ ظَنَّ أَن لَّن يَحُورَ(14)
He thought he would never return.
بَلَىٰٓ إِنَّ رَبَّهُۥ كَانَ بِهِۦ بَصِيرًۭا(15)
In fact, his Lord was watching him.
فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلشَّفَقِ(16)
I swear by the twilight.
وَٱلَّيْلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ(17)
And by the night, and what it covers.
وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا ٱتَّسَقَ(18)
And by the moon, as it grows full.
لَتَرْكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٍۢ(19)
You will mount stage by stage.
فَمَا لَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ(20)
What is the matter with them that they do not believe?
وَإِذَا قُرِئَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقُرْءَانُ لَا يَسْجُدُونَ ۩(21)
And when the Quran is read to them, they do not bow down?
بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُكَذِّبُونَ(22)
In fact, those who disbelieve are in denial.
وَٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يُوعُونَ(23)
But God knows what they hide inside.
فَبَشِّرْهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ(24)
So inform them of a painful punishment.
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُمْ أَجْرٌ غَيْرُ مَمْنُونٍۭ(25)
Except those who believe and do good deeds; they will have an undiminished reward.
