About this surah
Ash-Shams means The Sun. It begins with a beautiful string of oaths by the sun and its brightness, the moon that follows it, the day, the night, the sky and the earth. Then it says that whoever keeps their soul pure will succeed. The surah also mentions the people of Thamud, who rejected their prophet. It is a lovely surah for learning about right and wrong.
Arabic and meaning
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ وَٱلشَّمْسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا(1)
By the sun and its radiance.
وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَا(2)
And the moon as it follows it.
وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا(3)
And the day as it reveals it.
وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰهَا(4)
And the night as it conceals it.
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَىٰهَا(5)
And the sky and He who built it.
وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَا(6)
And the earth and He who spread it.
وَنَفْسٍۢ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا(7)
And the soul and He who proportioned it.
فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَىٰهَا(8)
And inspired it with its wickedness and its righteousness.
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا(9)
Successful is he who purifies it.
وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا(10)
Failing is he who corrupts it.
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَىٰهَآ(11)
Thamood denied in its pride.
إِذِ ٱنۢبَعَثَ أَشْقَىٰهَا(12)
When it followed its most wicked.
فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ نَاقَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَسُقْيَٰهَا(13)
The messenger of God said to them, “This is the she-camel of God, so let her drink.”
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسَوَّىٰهَا(14)
But they called him a liar, and hamstrung her. So their Lord crushed them for their sin, and leveled it.
وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَٰهَا(15)
And He does not fear its sequel.
