About this surah
Al-Layl means The Night. It swears by the night when it covers everything and the day when it shines, and it explains that people work in different ways. Those who give, are mindful of Allah and believe in goodness will be made easy for ease. It teaches children that generosity and stinginess lead to very different paths, and that Allah rewards a giving heart.
Arabic and meaning
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ(1)
By the night as it covers.
وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ(2)
And the day as it reveals.
وَمَا خَلَقَ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰٓ(3)
And He who created the male and the female.
إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ لَشَتَّىٰ(4)
Your endeavors are indeed diverse.
فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَٱتَّقَىٰ(5)
As for him who gives and is righteous.
وَصَدَّقَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ(6)
And confirms goodness.
فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ(7)
We will ease his way towards ease.
وَأَمَّا مَنۢ بَخِلَ وَٱسْتَغْنَىٰ(8)
But as for him who is stingy and complacent.
وَكَذَّبَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ(9)
And denies goodness.
فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْعُسْرَىٰ(10)
We will ease his way towards difficulty.
وَمَا يُغْنِى عَنْهُ مَالُهُۥٓ إِذَا تَرَدَّىٰٓ(11)
And his money will not avail him when he plummets.
إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا لَلْهُدَىٰ(12)
It is upon Us to guide.
وَإِنَّ لَنَا لَلْءَاخِرَةَ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ(13)
And to Us belong the Last and the First.
فَأَنذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًۭا تَلَظَّىٰ(14)
I have warned you of a Fierce Blaze.
لَا يَصْلَىٰهَآ إِلَّا ٱلْأَشْقَى(15)
None will burn in it except the very wicked.
ٱلَّذِى كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ(16)
He who denies and turns away.
وَسَيُجَنَّبُهَا ٱلْأَتْقَى(17)
But the devout will avoid it.
ٱلَّذِى يُؤْتِى مَالَهُۥ يَتَزَكَّىٰ(18)
He who gives his money to become pure.
وَمَا لِأَحَدٍ عِندَهُۥ مِن نِّعْمَةٍۢ تُجْزَىٰٓ(19)
Seeking no favor in return.
إِلَّا ٱبْتِغَآءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ(20)
Only seeking the acceptance of his Lord, the Most High.
وَلَسَوْفَ يَرْضَىٰ(21)
And he will be satisfied.
