About this surah

Al-Balad means The City, and it refers to Makkah. The surah says that human life comes with struggle, and then asks why we do not take the steep uphill path of doing good. It explains what that path is: freeing someone in difficulty, feeding a hungry orphan or a poor person, and being among those who believe and encourage each other to be patient and kind.

Arabic and meaning

  1. بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ(1)

    I swear by this land.

  2. وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ(2)

    And you are a resident of this land.

  3. وَوَالِدٍۢ وَمَا وَلَدَ(3)

    And by a father and what he fathered.

  4. لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ(4)

    We created man in distress.

  5. أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌۭ(5)

    Does he think that no one has power over him?

  6. يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًۭا لُّبَدًا(6)

    He says, “I have used up so much money.”

  7. أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ(7)

    Does he think that no one sees him?

  8. أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ(8)

    Did We not give him two eyes?

  9. وَلِسَانًۭا وَشَفَتَيْنِ(9)

    And a tongue, and two lips?

  10. وَهَدَيْنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ(10)

    And We showed him the two ways?

  11. فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ(11)

    But he did not brave the ascent.

  12. وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ(12)

    And what will explain to you what the ascent is?

  13. فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ(13)

    The freeing of a slave.

  14. أَوْ إِطْعَٰمٌۭ فِى يَوْمٍۢ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍۢ(14)

    Or the feeding on a day of hunger.

  15. يَتِيمًۭا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ(15)

    An orphan near of kin.

  16. أَوْ مِسْكِينًۭا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍۢ(16)

    Or a destitute in the dust.

  17. ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ(17)

    Then he becomes of those who believe, and advise one another to patience, and advise one another to kindness.

  18. أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ(18)

    These are the people of happiness.

  19. وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ(19)

    But as for those who defy Our revelations—these are the people of misery.

  20. عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌۭ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ(20)

    Upon them is a padlocked Fire.
