About this surah
Al-Qari'ah means The Striking Hour. It describes the Day of Judgement, when people will be like scattered moths and the mountains like fluffy carded wool. The surah explains that deeds will be weighed on a scale, and that a heavy scale of good brings a pleasant life. It is a short, memorable surah that teaches children to fill their scale with good actions.
Arabic and meaning
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ ٱلْقَارِعَةُ(1)
The Shocker.
مَا ٱلْقَارِعَةُ(2)
What is the Shocker?
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْقَارِعَةُ(3)
What will explain to you what the Shocker is?
يَوْمَ يَكُونُ ٱلنَّاسُ كَٱلْفَرَاشِ ٱلْمَبْثُوثِ(4)
The Day when the people will be like scattered moths.
وَتَكُونُ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَٱلْعِهْنِ ٱلْمَنفُوشِ(5)
And the mountains will be like tufted wool.
فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ(6)
As for he whose scales are heavy.
فَهُوَ فِى عِيشَةٍۢ رَّاضِيَةٍۢ(7)
He will be in a pleasant life.
وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ(8)
But as for he whose scales are light.
فَأُمُّهُۥ هَاوِيَةٌۭ(9)
His home is the Abyss.
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا هِيَهْ(10)
Do you know what it is?
نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌۢ(11)
