About this surah
Al-'Adiyat means The Racing Horses. It opens with the sound and dust of galloping horses charging in the morning, which is a very vivid picture for children. The surah then turns to the human heart, saying that people can be ungrateful to their Lord and love wealth too much. It reminds us that on the Day of Judgement Allah knows exactly what is inside every chest.
Arabic and meaning
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ وَٱلْعَٰدِيَٰتِ ضَبْحًۭا(1)
By the racers panting.
فَٱلْمُورِيَٰتِ قَدْحًۭا(2)
Igniting sparks.
فَٱلْمُغِيرَٰتِ صُبْحًۭا(3)
Raiding at dawn.
فَأَثَرْنَ بِهِۦ نَقْعًۭا(4)
Raising clouds of dust.
فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِۦ جَمْعًا(5)
Storming into the midst.
إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ لِرَبِّهِۦ لَكَنُودٌۭ(6)
Indeed, the human being is ungrateful to his Lord.
وَإِنَّهُۥ عَلَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ لَشَهِيدٌۭ(7)
And he bears witness to that.
وَإِنَّهُۥ لِحُبِّ ٱلْخَيْرِ لَشَدِيدٌ(8)
And he is fierce in his love of wealth.
۞ أَفَلَا يَعْلَمُ إِذَا بُعْثِرَ مَا فِى ٱلْقُبُورِ(9)
Does he not know? When the contents of the graves are scattered around.
وَحُصِّلَ مَا فِى ٱلصُّدُورِ(10)
And the contents of the hearts are obtained.
إِنَّ رَبَّهُم بِهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لَّخَبِيرٌۢ(11)
Their Lord, on that Day, is fully informed of them.
