About this surah
Al-Masad means The Palm Fibre. It is about Abu Lahab, an uncle of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, who worked hard to hurt him and stop his message, and about his wife who helped him. The surah says his wealth and efforts will not save him. It reminds children that being related to good people is not enough, because our own actions matter.
Arabic and meaning
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ تَبَّتْ يَدَآ أَبِى لَهَبٍۢ وَتَبَّ(1)
Condemned are the hands of Abee Lahab, and he is condemned.
مَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُ مَالُهُۥ وَمَا كَسَبَ(2)
His wealth did not avail him, nor did what he acquired.
سَيَصْلَىٰ نَارًۭا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍۢ(3)
He will burn in a Flaming Fire.
وَٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ حَمَّالَةَ ٱلْحَطَبِ(4)
And his wife—the firewood carrier.
فِى جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌۭ مِّن مَّسَدٍۭ(5)
Around her neck is a rope of thorns.
