About this surah
Al-Humazah means The Slanderer. It warns against people who mock others, talk badly behind their backs, and think their piled up wealth will make them last forever. The surah teaches children clearly that making fun of someone is a serious thing, not a joke. It reminds us to use our words kindly and to see money as a trust from Allah, not as a reason to feel better than others.
Arabic and meaning
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ وَيْلٌۭ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍۢ لُّمَزَةٍ(1)
Woe to every slanderer backbiter.
ٱلَّذِى جَمَعَ مَالًۭا وَعَدَّدَهُۥ(2)
Who gathers wealth and counts it over.
يَحْسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُۥٓ أَخْلَدَهُۥ(3)
Thinking that his wealth has made him immortal.
كَلَّا ۖ لَيُنۢبَذَنَّ فِى ٱلْحُطَمَةِ(4)
By no means. He will be thrown into the Crusher.
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْحُطَمَةُ(5)
And what will make you realize what the Crusher is?
نَارُ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُوقَدَةُ(6)
God's kindled Fire.
ٱلَّتِى تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى ٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةِ(7)
That laps to the hearts.
إِنَّهَا عَلَيْهِم مُّؤْصَدَةٌۭ(8)
It closes in on them.
فِى عَمَدٍۢ مُّمَدَّدَةٍۭ(9)
