About this surah
Ash-Sharh means The Opening Up of the heart. It is a short, comforting surah revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, reminding him that Allah lifted his burden and raised his mention. Twice it says that with hardship comes ease. Children who are worried about something difficult often love this surah, because it promises that hard times do not last forever.
Arabic and meaning
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ(1)
Did We not soothe your heart?
وَوَضَعْنَا عَنكَ وِزْرَكَ(2)
And lift from you your burden.
ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنقَضَ ظَهْرَكَ(3)
Which weighed down your back?
وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ(4)
And raised for you your reputation?
فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا(5)
With hardship comes ease.
إِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًۭا(6)
With hardship comes ease.
فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَٱنصَبْ(7)
When your work is done, turn to devotion.
وَإِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَٱرْغَب(8)
And to your Lord turn for everything.
