About this surah
Al-Qadr means The Decree. It tells us about Laylat al-Qadr, the special night in Ramadan when the Quran began to be revealed. Allah says this one night is better than a thousand months, and that the angels and the Spirit come down with peace until the dawn. Many children learn this surah in Ramadan while looking forward to that beautiful, peaceful night.
Arabic and meaning
بِّسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَٰهُ فِى لَيْلَةِ ٱلْقَدْرِ(1)
We sent it down on the Night of Decree.
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ ٱلْقَدْرِ(2)
But what will convey to you what the Night of Decree is?
لَيْلَةُ ٱلْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌۭ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍۢ(3)
The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.
تَنَزَّلُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ فِيهَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِم مِّن كُلِّ أَمْرٍۢ(4)
In it descend the angels and the Spirit, by the leave of their Lord, with every command.
سَلَٰمٌ هِىَ حَتَّىٰ مَطْلَعِ ٱلْفَجْرِ(5)
Peace it is; until the rise of dawn.
