About this surah
Al-Infitar means The Splitting Open. It describes the sky splitting apart on the Day of Judgement, and asks us gently what made us forget our Most Generous Lord, the One who shaped us and gave us our form. It also reminds us that kind angels are writing down everything we do. It is short, powerful, and a good surah to think about before you sleep.
Arabic and meaning
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنفَطَرَتْ(1)
When the sky breaks apart.
وَإِذَا ٱلْكَوَاكِبُ ٱنتَثَرَتْ(2)
When the planets are scattered.
وَإِذَا ٱلْبِحَارُ فُجِّرَتْ(3)
When the oceans are exploded.
وَإِذَا ٱلْقُبُورُ بُعْثِرَتْ(4)
When the tombs are strewn around.
عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌۭ مَّا قَدَّمَتْ وَأَخَّرَتْ(5)
Each soul will know what it has advanced, and what it has deferred.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ مَا غَرَّكَ بِرَبِّكَ ٱلْكَرِيمِ(6)
O man! What deluded you concerning your Lord, the Most Generous?
ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكَ فَسَوَّىٰكَ فَعَدَلَكَ(7)
He Who created you, and formed you, and proportioned you?
فِىٓ أَىِّ صُورَةٍۢ مَّا شَآءَ رَكَّبَكَ(8)
In whatever shape He willed, He assembled you.
كَلَّا بَلْ تُكَذِّبُونَ بِٱلدِّينِ(9)
But you reject the religion.
وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ لَحَٰفِظِينَ(10)
Though over you are watchers.
كِرَامًۭا كَٰتِبِينَ(11)
Honest recorders.
يَعْلَمُونَ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ(12)
They know everything you do.
إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيمٍۢ(13)
The virtuous will be in bliss.
وَإِنَّ ٱلْفُجَّارَ لَفِى جَحِيمٍۢ(14)
While the wicked will be in Hell.
يَصْلَوْنَهَا يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ(15)
They will enter it on the Day of Justice.
وَمَا هُمْ عَنْهَا بِغَآئِبِينَ(16)
And they will not be absent from it.
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا يَوْمُ ٱلدِّينِ(17)
But what will convey to you what the Day of Justice is?
ثُمَّ مَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا يَوْمُ ٱلدِّينِ(18)
Then again, what will convey to you what the Day of Justice is?
يَوْمَ لَا تَمْلِكُ نَفْسٌۭ لِّنَفْسٍۢ شَيْـًۭٔا ۖ وَٱلْأَمْرُ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلَّهِ(19)
The Day when no soul will avail another soul anything; and the decision on that Day is God’s.
